The Dying Sound Of Regret

St. Michaels Hospital
Saturday 31st May Morning 11.50am

Breeze is lying in hospital, on a hard bed with just a table next to him. On the table there is a cup of water and a telephone. He decides to telephone Sett to see if he is conscious yet

Sett: Hello?

Breeze: Ryan

Sett: James. You should turn the television on now

Breeze: Why?

Sett: Just do it

Breeze hesitates: Okay

Breeze turns on the television to see Jareth get ready to talk

Breeze watches the interview, it finishes

Sett: So what did you think?

Breeze: He’s got a good grip on reality, he talks the truth, wanting money to earn a good living is always a good incentive to win.

Sett: And what you think of him in the ring, you have seen him fight?

Breeze: He’s good, very good but he is wrong about a few things though

Sett: Like what?

Breeze: Like he keeps telling me that my mind is not focused on him, how would he know. Anway maybe he thinks I have no room in my head for him but I do take him seriously, I know he’s good. I never said he wasn’t but I am going to win and he will see I am better

Sett: He thinks you will meet again

Breeze: We probably will and then he can try again, I got this good today by trying so I respect him for that, he seems like an alright guy, you don’t necessarily have to say to him that I said that.

Sett laughs: And as for the Social Misfit?

Breeze laughs: He’s funny, it would be nice to meet him, I seem to have picked up an irrational hatred for him, when we meet I really am going to try and injure the little bastard, anyway you Recovering?

Sett: As well as possible. You?

Breeze: Oh I'm well; I won't forget this cut under my eye

Sett: I don't think I can forget about most of these cuts I've earned.

Breeze: Good. Any scars?

Sett: A few, a few.

Breeze: Good, that brings me immense joy

Sett: I knew it would.

Breeze: Do you hate me, yet?

Sett: Oh..Maybe.  Maybe in the loosest sense of the term.

Breeze: I have goose bumps after you telling me that

Sett: Calm down, buddy, you're scaring me.

Breeze: Good, you think that was Breeze. If I had not suffered a concussion a few days before then I wouldn't have collapsed at the end. You still would have and then I would have cut you from toe to forehead. You're lucky. Don't call me buddy

Sett: You assume too much, Breeze.

Breeze: Maybe it's you that assumes too much. I have took the journey and survived Sett

Sett: Have I not felt your hate?  Am I not still here today?

Breeze: You collapsed. I know about your situation. You have to have stitches in 8 places and there are more holes in you than on a golf course

Sett: Of course...but how are you?

Breeze tries to twist to his side but groans

Breeze: Fine, fine

Sett: Point is made, then.  We both let it all out, and we're still here.   What does that say?

Breeze: You aren't better than me

Sett: And you're not better than me, either.

Breeze: I wasn't at my best and you used that damned silver dagger on me

Breeze: That hit will make a scar, a faint one but a scar. It will be with me for the rest of my life, you bastard!

Sett: And what better way to remember me by

Breeze: What about that scar on your the back of your neck, how is that doing?

Sett brings up a hand to his neck.

Sett: It's doing fine...just fine.

Breeze's eyes narrows: What kind of question is that?

Sett: I guess it's not one.  Good luck.  Jareth'll be at one hundred percent, you know.

Breeze: And I won't?

Breeze: Don't wish me good luck; you shove your good lucks up your ass

Sett: Yes, yes, I should have expected as much from you.

Breeze: Well good, next time you try and tell me good luck you'll know not to

Sett: Okay, I won't.  So dammit, are you going to be 100% or not?

Breeze: No, but I'll be well enough to wrestle

Sett: Are you so sure?

Breeze: The doctors are, that Doctor from the private hospital made the trip over here to see me. I wonder how he got here?

Sett: Who knows?

Sett smiles.

Breeze: Stop trying to be everyone's friend and why are you helping me anyway

Sett: I thought you might want the help.

Sett: That's all.

Breeze: I know there's something behind this, you're planning something and I don't want any help, stop diminishing my victory. I will do it on my own just like everyone else.

Sett: You couldn't do it on your own, not in the state you're in.

Breeze: And why am I in this state?

Sett: I put you there.

Breeze laughs down the phone: You and Fudge put me there, if I hadn't been weakened you would have two broken legs by now

Sett: Keep dreaming, James.  I'm not the one who has to keep their game up.

Breeze: Damn You!

Sett: What's wrong, Breeze?  Have I finally gotten to you?  Are you broken?  Are you MAD at me?

Breeze: I am far from broken

Sett: Good, good.  I wouldn't want one of my wrestlers broken before their first match.

Breeze: I am not your wrestler

Sett: Then what are you?

Breeze: I am a wrestler, but I don't belong to you, I belong to the HWA. You may be president but you have no control over me

Sett: Is that so?  Who puts you in matches, Breeze?  Who's the one who will give you those title shots I know you want?

Breeze: You put me in any match you want, one with you would do nicely

Sett: What would that help?

Breeze: What harm would it do?

Sett looks down at his battered body.

Sett: Oh, only harm in the physical kind.

Breeze: On you or me, boy?

Sett: Take a look at yourself and answer that question for you.

Breeze: I told you, Fudge weakened me that's why I collapsed

Sett: You always make excuses.

Breeze: I don't make excuses, I state facts

Sett: Of course, of course.  So what is it you want?

Breeze: I wanted to see if you suffered at my hands, you seem to have an impressive record and the HWA superstars adore you, what did the mighty Sett retrieve from mere me

Sett: Just more bumps, bruises and scars to add to my collection.  All in a days work.  Nothing new.  Is that what you wanted to hear?

Breeze grunts: Well next time I'll finish the job

Sett laughs: If an entire underground crime syndicate couldn't do the job, what makes you think you can?

Breeze: Cut your crap, it ain't the past that counts its the future, and there only is sweat, tears, blood and me in your future

There is a knock on the door and Breeze looks towards it. A nurse enters

Nurse: Excuse me someone to see you Mr. Breeze

Breeze holds up the phone: Sett?

Sett: Yeah?

Breeze: Someone is here to see me, let me get rid of them first

Sett grins.

Sett: Go for it.

Breeze: I will

Sett: Who is it?

Breeze goes to hang up

Breeze: I'll tell you in a minute

Sett: Okay.

Breeze looks through the doorway and gasps. The gasp clearly audible to Sett

Sett: Who is it?  Who is it?!

Breeze cannot move

Sett: Breeze...who is it?

Breeze: It's... It's...

Sett: Who is it?  Who is it?!

Breeze: It's... It's...

Sett: Spit it out...who?

Breeze: It's Fudge

Sett laughs.

Sett: Have fun

Sett: Wait, I have a suggestion. Put me on speakerphone.

Breeze: What!?

Breeze then does so

Breeze stares at Fudge remembering his one glimmer between the chair shots and the hospital bed. That was the face of Fudge, a bad dream, he thought. A nightmare.

Fudge: Feeling better, BUDDY?

Breeze stares with hateful eyes at Fudge

Breeze: You here to finish me off, then

It wasn't exactly a question. But an accusation

Fudge: Oh I wish it was that simple... But its not

Breeze: Why is it not?

Fudge: I wanna kick your ass IN the ring... I want the World Title too, why should I cost myself that... For YOU

Breeze: Sett has cut off that rule; we can do what we want now

Sett: Yes I did say that, if I do remember correctly

Sett laughs

Fudge: Save it for the ring Breeze... Oh let me judge your next words and answer before you ask... No I ain’t scared..

Breeze: I was going to call you stupid actually, if the tables were turned I'd be ripping out the tubes going up your arms and then I'd rip all the stitches off your body

Sett: He's aggressive, eh Fudge?

Fudge: Oh.. That’s right... You wish you were me, don’t you? The tables aren’t turned though are they Breeze.. And I ain’t gonna take advantage of an already beaten man...

Fudge grins...

Fudge: Yeah... He thinks he is..

Breeze snaps: Shut up Sett!

Sett laughs

Breeze: I am far from beaten Fudge

Fudge steps forward and leans into Breezes face who can’t move enough to hit him

Fudge: You have no Idea how close you are...

Breeze snarls back: Tell me

Fudge: Look into my eyes.... That’s.... How... Close...

Breeze laughs: That ain’t nearly close enough to worry me

Fudge steps backwards and laughs, looking at the morphine that’s being pumped into Breeze to ease pain

Fudge: Then they must have you on some heavy shit, man

Breeze: I need this so I can fight at Redemption, you jackass!

Sett: Yeah, he's right, I have it too

Fudge: Why?  I have never had anything to ease my pain and I have been told not to compete more times than I can count... Tell me Breeze... Who was it that REALLY made you end up here?

Sett: It was me Fudge!!

Fudge: Sett.. I wasn’t talking to you...

Breeze: You tell me Stephen, who put me here?

Fudge: Call me that again... I dare you... I fucking dare you...

Breeze: Maybe you helped put me here.

Breeze waits a few seconds

Breeze: Stephen

Fudge dives at Breeze and grabs hit throat

Fudge: You wanna go... Lets go... How bout you use that desire to get your ass up and fight me, bitch!

Sett: What's going on in there!?

Breeze struggles to get up but then a nurse comes in

Nurse: You must stay down Mr. Breeze, you are not out of any immediate danger. What is going on here anyway?

Breeze stares at Fudge for a moment

Breeze: Nothing

Fudge: Nothing

Breeze: Don't interrupt again, you may leave

The nurse stares at Fudge then walks out of the room

Sett laughs again

Fudge sits down on a chair and rests his feet on Breezes bed, taking a sip of BREEZE'S water

Fudge: That’s some good water... But the bed feels like a rock

Breeze grunts

Breeze: It is

Sett: Nice Fudge

Fudge: Can’t you get a new one, I’m so uncomfortable..

Sett laughs even louder

Breeze: You taunt a helpless man Fudge, fine, what goes around, come around

Fudge: It won’t come back at me... When was the last time you saw me in a hospital bed?  In fact why not ask Sett..

Sett: Nope, I've never seen him in a hospital bed

Breeze: Goodbye Sett

Sett: Wait let me listen

Sett laughs as Breeze puts the phone down

Fudge: Do you treat all your friends that way?

Breeze: He isn't my friend

Fudge: Oh come on now... I have seen him pushing you around the hospital in that wheelchair....

Breeze lowers his head unable to speak

Breeze: Will you do me a small favour Stephen?

Fudge: Stop calling me that..... Name the favour... I'll see what I can do

Breeze: Take this chain from around my neck

Fudge leans down and touches one

Fudge: This one...

Breeze: No, the other one

Fudge touches the other

Fudge: This one?

Breeze nods his face slightly sad

Fudge: .... Okay...

Fudge seems to be removing the chain then takes a step back

Fudge: I ain’t taking that off...

Breeze: Take it off

Fudge: No... Take it off yourself...

Fudge's head drops, his eyes possibly filling with tears, but why?  What was that chain?

Breeze: Take the chain off

Breeze almost screams

Fudge raises his head... His face is clear...

Fudge: FINE! This is YOUR choice!!

Fudge reaches down toward Breeze and slowly removes the chain then looks at it, with remorse and regret all over his face

Breeze turns his face from Fudge's gaze while he does this, a single tear in his eye

Fudge moves toward the dresser beside Breeze's bed, and rests the chain on it, placing it gently down.  Fudge then takes a step back and sits in the chair

Before doing so, he reads it to himself To James I will be with you as your closest friend and most loved brother... always Stephen

Fudge then looks down towards his own, similar words written onto it

Breeze: I thought you hated to be called Stephen...

Fudge: That was the one exception...

Fudge turns away from Breeze, reading the inscription on his own chain

"To Stephen I'll be right behind you watching your back as a friend and a brother till the end of days... Always James"

Fudge's face turns white as he sits on the chair in disbelief

Breeze doesn't look at Fudge but instead away from him

Fudge: Remember when we bought those....

Fudge turns to face Breeze

Breeze: Of course.. I mean, I don't want to talk about it

Fudge: We saw those and the jewellery store said they were a set, and had to have inscriptions in them, and we made the perfect sayings up... remember?

Fudge pauses

Fudge: They fit together and make an F and a B, that’s how we had them customized,  I never thought you'd take it off....

Fudge then removes his own slowly...

Fudge: Or me..

Breeze speaks before he thinks

Breeze: No

Fudge places his chain next to Breezes on the dresser

Fudge: What do you mean no, it’s done..

Breeze: I meant no, I don't remember when we bought them

Fudge doesn’t seem convinced

Fudge: Okay... Well since you paid... They are both there for you to admire

Breeze doesn't speak and neither does Fudge, they both stand there for a long time

Fudge: That’s something less to be weighing me down when I'm taking back the World Title on Sunday...

Fudges emotions got the better of him, but he seems to have taken control of himself again

Fudge: And when I kick your ass

Breeze doesn't answer

Fudge: I mean damn... The amount of time I have worn that thing.... It’s kinda...

Fudge hasn’t even got words to finish what he started, it’s too hard

Fudge: Never mind

Breeze finally looks up

Breeze: You know why I really hate you don't you, the real reason I mean

Fudge nods

Breeze: And you also know that because of it we can never become anything more than enemies because of it?

Fudge: Yes....

Breeze: Breeze looks away from Fudge

Breeze: They were the only things holding me back, now it is completely over, you know that now. I don't want you holding back when we come to meet, I hope you'll respect me that much, do you understand

Fudge: ....I understand that...

Breeze turns his head even further away from Fudge so he can't see him

Breeze: Then goodbye Stephen

Fudge: But....

Fudge pauses and drops his head

Fudge: .... Goodbye, James

They both stand there for a long time

Breeze: Will you take those two amulets from the room when you leave I can't bare to look at them

Fudge: No...

Breeze: They're knocking me sick

Fudge: I don’t care... I don’t want them... They mean shit to me...

Both clearly in denial stand there

Breeze: Well tell the damn nurse to do it when you leave

Fudge walks out the room tears in his eyes

Breeze also faces the door once Fudge leaves, salt water running down his cheeks

Breeze: Oh Fudge, one more thing

Fudge: What?

Fudge says without turning round

Breeze: You've brought this on yourself

Fudge walks out slamming the door, he as quick word with the nurse

Fudge: Those chains give him bad luck, take them away from him

The nurse enters the room

She takes the amulets away from Breeze, Breeze is about to say something but then stops

The nurse takes the amulets outside

Fudge: Give them to me

Nurse: What?

Fudge: Give them to me?

Fudge: The Chains....

The nurse obediently hands them over

Fudge: Don't tell Breeze or I'll have your ass fired

The nurse nods: Yes sir, Yes sir

Fudge grabs the amulets and puts them into his pocket

Breeze is left in the room, his face with a look deep depression and tears still streaking down his eyes

Breeze: It is over

He says quietly to himself

Breeze: IT IS OVER!!!

He shouts

Fudge hears the shout as he walks away

Fudge: It is

FADE TO BLACK
